Each term we run a Basic and an Intermediate Family History course, each session lasting two hours and held over 5 weeks. from January 2017 each course will be £20.00 per 5 week course to be paid on the first morning. You will need to register at the centre if you are interested in either of these courses. The course is usually run on Monday mornings, 10am to 12 noon. You can stay over to do your own research or see one of the eyfhs volunteers at their helpdesk.

EYFHS hold a help desk on a Monday afternoon if you need help after the mornings course. The Carnegie volunteers are on hand every Tuesday and Friday, from 10am to 3 pm, and can give help if you are stuck at any point. 

EYFHS Monumental Inscription booklets are available to buy at various prices.

The next basic course starts on Monday 11th September, 10am to 12.30pm

Local History

As the local history course has now finished we are now holding monthly talks on Local History on the second Wednesday of the month, 10am to 12 noon.

Courses in Family History

The  Basic Course

 This is a  5 week course of 2 hours each session.

  • Week 1   Starting points, Family sources, Family trees and charts and record keeping.
  • Week 2   Using the GRO, Births, marriages and death certificate workshop, Using free BMD, Yorkshire BMD and UKBMD.
  • Week 3   The census, using 'Ancestry' and 'Find my Past'
  • Week 4   Parish Registers, Family Search and the 'IGI'.
  • Week 5   Family History software, Electronic record keeping, other sources, (online & local)

Starting in 2017 the cost will be £20.00 per course to be paid at the beginning of the course
There will be a break for refreshments half way through each session

The Intermediate Course

This is a 5 week course of 2 hours each session.

  • Week 1 Wills, M.I.s and Cemetery records
  • Week 2 Military Records.
  • Week 3 Local History :- Books, Photos, Social Aspects & Maps. How they lived - their day to day lives.
  • Week 4 Early Records :- Pre 1800's Manor Records & Early Taxes. 
  • Week 5 Taking it further:- Newspapers, British and overseas records plus Immigration.

                    The cost is £20.00 per course which should be paid at the beginning of the first session.
There will be a break for refreshments half way through each session 

Resources at Carnegie Heritage Centre

To help people with research we have a wide range of useful and relevant resources at the centre:

Books
We have shelves of books on Local History for visitors to read whilst they are in the centre.

Maps
Our map drawers and new map cabinet contain a variety of Hull maps, both street and Ordnance Survey types.

Box Files
Our collection of box files contains information on the buildings and streets of Hull, as well as the people of Hull. Articles and photographs have been collected over many years, initially by Chris Ketchell and later by volunteers, maintaining this unique collection. We now have over 400 box files on various topics of local interest.

Street Directories
We have various street directories ranging from 1784 to 1967, including Kelly's, Whites and others.

Photographs and Postcards
Carnegie Heritage Centre has a large collection of photographs of old Hull which have been digitised and put onto computers. We also have a selection of postcards from the Local History Archives Unit Collection, for sale at 50p each.

Donations of books, memorabilia, photos or money are always welcome.

 Part of a series of booklets detailing aspects of the history of Hull, it is priced at £2 (excluding postage) – as are most of the booklets – and is available from our shop.
